I haven’t seen my friend James Herbert in person since, sheesh, must be January 2020? He was in Toronto for a visit and we sat together at some Raptors games that month and went out one night after one to a real “this place exists for people coming into town for games to get $40 nachos beforehand” establishment. I remember feeling so tipsy and happy and hopeful because talking to James about basketball — or anything— is like that. I’d had one beer.
The entire time James and I were recording this episode I watched the sun track very angelically and blindingly across his face in a kind of gentle and less cruel reminder of time’s inevitable passing, and I had that same feeling.
I wanted to have him on to talk about interviews and interviewing people, because he’s really good at it. On the episode I mention looking over in locker rooms, or on the sideline, to see James talking with a player or a coach who looks like they are hanging on his every word so much so that their bodies are angled intently toward him, or they are leaning down to get closer.
