Sometimes, you wake up, and before you even brush your teeth — like as you’re going, “ah” — you get the first call. And it’s like okay, that’s my first nugget, first breadcrumb, and hopefully each crumb will make a cookie at some point.
I think it’s really telling, and also genuinely nice, that Jake Fischer gave a little chuckle when I introduced him as “legitimate NBA insider”. He absolutely is, but part of what makes him so good at his job as one is Jake’s ability to see the 360-degree scope of the role — the real lives it touches, the nuance of trades, the shifting ground of them on any given day (maybe even moment) — and have some humility about it.
Beyond insider, Jake’s a wonderful writer who loves the little personal details in an athlete’s game (noting Chandler Parson’s love of a pump fake and seeing Chandler Parson’s face light up when asked about said-pump fake) that can occasionally get overlooked in coverage. We talked about that. We also talked about, in his job turning necessarily more outward, whether he misses holding the great little secrets of people, or being able to go up to someone in a basketball environment without it becoming transactional.
