For me, I’ve gotten the best opportunities and felt the most in control ultimately when I’ve said yes to things that either terrified me, or didn’t feel like the exact right fit. ‘Cause there’s just never going to be that.
I recently watched a clip of journalists Sarah Spain and Charlotte Wilder on Pablo Torre’s Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast that felt simultaneously like a gigantic relief as much as a new personal existential floodgate opening. Spain and Wilder talk candidly about their experiences as women in sports media, but also the process of aging as a woman in sports media. I was rapt. We (me, other women in this space, sometimes men) spend so much time advocating for getting more women into sports media and championing inclusion in other ways that we just… don’t really discuss the room and security for women aging into their careers, because it’s still more likely they’ll age out of them. It was jarring, enlightening and encouraging, and also made me wonder why I didn’t know Charlotte — who’s had stints at Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, For the Win, is now a cohost on the NBA podcast Oddball with Amin Elhassan as well as a rotating host on The Dan Le Batard Show, and writes the newsletter, The Wilder Things — better.
